Men earn no. 5 rank

March 30, 2006

Due to the turmoil surrounding the Duke men’s lacrosse team, the Blue Devils forfeited their games last week with Georgetown and Mt. St. Mary’s. The two default winners played each other this past Tuesday.

The Hoyas (6-1) thrashed the Mountaineers 17-7 and earned a national rank of fifth. Junior Trevor Casey and sophomore Andrew Baird each posted hat-tricks in the win while sophomore Brendan Cannon led the team with five points on one goal and four assists.

Casey ignited the high-scoring affair, registering the first two goals of the game with assists from Cannon. He soon completed his hat-trick, scoring an unassisted goal with under one minute left in the first quarter, giving the Hoyas a comfortable 5-2 lead.

The second quarter was highlighted by a barrage of Georgetown goals, extending the Hoyas’ halftime advantage to 12-5. Senior middie Pete Cannon snuck a goal past the Mt. St. Mary’s goalie with seven minutes remaining in the half, unleashing a flood of Georgetown scores that put the game out of reach.

Georgetown looks to carry its momentum as the team travels to Annapolis, Md. to take on sixth-ranked Navy this Saturday, April 1.
